The generation of information rich biomimetic materials would also be facilitated by the development of chemically versatile and facile methods to combine different materials to form complex multifunctional structures. In particular, the convenient and chemically versatile polydopamine and polyphenol crosslinking chemistry is being exploited to functionalize material surfaces with diverse biomolecular elements, or to crosslink the biomolecules themselves into multifunctional clusters. Development of this chemically versatile platform will also cross-fertilize the research thrusts of peptoid interfaces and functionalized nanopores. Chemical versatility will also enable rapid screening of different functional combinations and accelerate the development of biointerfaces.
